3D Signs in Kenya:
Materials, Process & What to Expect

Buyer's Guide 3D Signage · July 2026 · 10 min read

A well-made 3D sign does something a printed banner or flat panel simply cannot — it commands attention, creates shadow and depth, and tells a visitor immediately that your business is serious. It's the difference between a sign that gets noticed and one that gets ignored.

But 3D signs are also the most misunderstood category in signage. Customers often come to us with questions like: What material should I choose? How does lighting work? How long will it take? What will it actually cost?

This guide answers all of it — plainly, without jargon, based on how we actually do things at FlexRad.

FlexRad fabricates and installs 3D signs for businesses across Kenya — from small door signs to large illuminated shopfront letters. See our 3D sign service or get a free quote.

What exactly is a 3D sign?

A 3D sign — also called dimensional lettering, built-up letters, or raised signage — is a sign where the letters or logo elements have physical depth and stand off the wall or backing panel. Instead of printing your logo flat on a surface, each letter or shape is fabricated with a face, sides (called returns), and sometimes internal lighting.

The result is a sign that:

  • Casts shadows and changes appearance as light moves throughout the day
  • Reads clearly from a distance and at an angle
  • Looks premium and built-to-last rather than temporary
  • Works both indoors (reception areas, feature walls) and outdoors (shopfronts, building facades)

3D signs are used for everything from small door nameplates to large rooftop letters visible from the road. The same core fabrication principles apply whether the sign is 30cm wide or 10 metres long.

Materials: which one is right for you?

The material you choose affects cost, lifespan, finish options, and whether your sign can be illuminated. Here are the four main materials we work with at FlexRad.

Most popular
Acrylic (Perspex)
Lightweight, clean-edged, and available in many colours and finishes. Works beautifully indoors and can be face-lit or halo-lit with LEDs. The most common material for reception signs and shopfronts.
Best for: offices, retail, hospitality
Premium
Stainless Steel
The most prestigious option. Polished, brushed, or mirror finish. Extremely durable outdoors — resistant to rust, UV, and Nairobi's dust and rain. High-end hotels, banks, and corporate headquarters.
Best for: prestige brands, outdoor use
Illuminated
Channelium (Channel Letters)
Metal-faced letters with an open or translucent back. Designed specifically for illuminated signage — LEDs are mounted inside the channel. Common on building exteriors and retail shopfronts.
Best for: lit shopfront letters, exterior branding
Budget-friendly
Celluca / PVC Foam
Lightweight expanded PVC that can be cut, shaped, and painted. Excellent value for indoor signs, door nameplates, and office branding where outdoor durability isn't needed. Smooth finish, easy to paint any colour.
Best for: indoor signs, tight budgets, quick turnaround

There's also aluminium composite panel (ACP) — a flat aluminium-faced panel often used as the backing for 3D letters. ACP gives a clean, modern base that complements any letter material.

Lighting options explained

Lighting transforms a 3D sign from a daytime fixture into a 24-hour brand asset. There are four main approaches.

Face-lit
LEDs shine through a translucent face. The letter itself glows. Bold and highly visible at night.
Halo-lit
LEDs behind the letter cast a glow onto the wall. Elegant, subtle, creates a floating effect.
Edge-lit
Light enters from the edge of an acrylic panel, illuminating engraved or printed graphics within.
Non-illuminated
No lighting. Relies on ambient or spot lighting. Lower cost — ideal for well-lit indoor spaces.
Worth knowing: All our illuminated signs use long-life LED modules. LED lighting typically lasts 50,000+ hours, runs cool, and draws minimal power compared to older neon or fluorescent options.

The fabrication process, step by step

When you order a 3D sign from FlexRad, here's exactly what happens from first contact to installation day.

1
Brief & artwork review
You share your logo file, preferred size, material, and wall type. We review your artwork and flag any issues — thin strokes, tight spacing, or fonts that don't fabricate well at small sizes. We accept AI, EPS, PDF, or high-res PNG.
2
Design mockup
We produce a visual mockup showing the sign on your wall, in the correct colours and to scale. This is your chance to adjust sizing, material choice, or lighting before anything is cut. Mockups are free.
3
Quote & approval
Once you approve the mockup, we issue a firm quote. A deposit is required to begin production. We'll confirm the timeline at this stage — typically 3–7 working days depending on complexity and material availability.
4
Cutting & fabrication
Letters are cut using CNC routing or laser cutting depending on material. Returns (the sides of each letter) are bent and welded. For illuminated signs, LED modules and power supplies are fitted inside the housing.
5
Finishing & painting
Assembled letters are sanded smooth, primed, and finished in your specified colour using automotive-grade spray paint or vinyl wrap. For stainless steel, brushing or polishing is done at this stage.
6
Delivery & installation
Our team handles delivery and wall installation. For illuminated signs, we connect to your mains supply. We do a full test before we leave, and clean up the site. Installation is available across Nairobi and we can arrange countrywide delivery.

How much do 3D signs cost in Kenya?

3D sign pricing in Kenya varies widely based on material, size, and lighting. These ranges are based on real FlexRad jobs in 2026.

Sign type & materialTypical price range
Small PVC foam 3D letters (indoor, door/reception)KSh 8,000 – 25,000
Medium acrylic letters — non-illuminated (shopfront)KSh 25,000 – 60,000
Medium acrylic letters — face-lit or halo-litKSh 40,000 – 100,000
Channelium channel letters — illuminated exteriorKSh 50,000 – 120,000
Stainless steel 3D letters — brushed or polishedKSh 60,000 – 200,000+
Full 3D logo sign with ACP backing panelKSh 35,000 – 150,000
These are indicative ranges. The single biggest variable is overall size — a 1-metre logo costs far less than a 4-metre one in the same material. Send us your logo and dimensions for an accurate quote.

How to choose the right 3D sign

The right material and lighting depend on where the sign will go and how it will be seen. Here's a quick decision guide:

Choose illuminated if…
  • Your business is open in the evenings
  • You're on a busy road or mall frontage
  • You want maximum visibility from a distance
  • Your brand uses colour that pops when lit
Skip lighting if…
  • Sign is in a well-lit indoor space
  • Budget is the primary constraint
  • No access to a power point near the sign
  • It's a temporary installation

Tips for getting the most from your 3D sign

  • Provide a vector logo file. AI or EPS files give us clean outlines that scale to any size without quality loss. Bitmap logos (JPEG, low-res PNG) may need to be redrawn before fabrication, which adds time and cost.
  • Book a site visit before you finalise size. The same 1-metre sign can look perfect on one wall and too small on another. A site visit — which FlexRad offers free for larger orders — ensures the proportions are right before anything is cut.
  • Check your wall surface before installation day. Some wall types (glass, tiles, hollow partitions) need special fixings. Let us know in advance so we bring the right hardware and avoid delays on the day.
  • Specify Pantone or RAL colour codes if you have them. If your brand has exact colour standards, share the Pantone or RAL reference so your sign matches your other branded materials precisely.
  • Clean regularly — it only takes seconds. Dust in Nairobi settles fast, especially on white or mirror-finish letters. A quick wipe with a damp cloth every few weeks keeps your sign looking sharp for years.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a 3D sign last?
A well-made 3D sign should last 5–10+ years with minimal maintenance. Stainless steel and aluminium signs can last decades. PVC foam is more suited to indoor use and may need repainting after 3–5 years. LED modules in illuminated signs typically last 50,000+ hours.
Can you make signs with complex logos or multiple colours?
Yes. We handle multi-colour logos by painting individual letters in different colours or using vinyl colour wraps. Very complex logos may be simplified slightly for fabrication — we'll show you any proposed changes in the mockup stage and won't proceed without your approval.
Do you handle installation outside Nairobi?
Yes. We fabricate in Nairobi and can arrange installation or shipping to any location in Kenya. For upcountry installations, we typically schedule a dedicated installation trip. Contact us with your location for a logistics quote.
What's the minimum order size?
There's no minimum — we make single signs as small as a door nameplate and as large as a rooftop installation. Smaller signs are generally faster to produce and can sometimes be completed in 2–3 working days.
Do I need a permit to install a sign in Nairobi?
Outdoor commercial signage in Nairobi typically requires a permit from the Nairobi City County. Requirements depend on size, location, and whether the sign is illuminated. We can advise on the process — see our guide to sign permits in Nairobi for details.
